CLASS:
International 505 - The premier high performance two person racing dinghy around the world. One of the most widespread - if not the most widespread - high performance dinghy classes. The largest and most active two person high performance dinghy classes in North America. The boat preferred by many of the World's top dinghy racers.
COURSE:
Location - off Cascais, Portugal
Length – 11-15 miles around buoys set by the Race Committee
FORMAT:
Nine races with each team's worst race finish discarded.
PARTICIPANTS:
Over 100 two-person teams from Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, South Africa, Sweden, Great Britain, USA and Portugal. A current entry list is available on the event web site.
TEAMS TO WATCH:
Thomas Moss (crew) and Krister Bergstrom (driver) (Sweden) – Krister and Thomas won the 2000 International 505 World Championship in Durban, South Africa, Krister’s fifth 505 World Championship. Krister also won the 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1991 505 world championships with different crews, as well as coming very close at other world championships such as the 1995 and 1997 world championships with Thomas.
Team McLube - Mike Martin (crew) and Howard Hamlin (driver) (California, USA) - Mike and Howard were the 1999 505 World Champions and have won the 1996 and 1999 North American Championships together. Mike Martin won the 2000 North Americans as a helm. Howard has won a total of five North American championships. They have also been second and third at several recent world championships. In 2000, they each steered, with Mike Martin and Steve Bourdow finishing 2nd at the Durban worlds while Howard Hamlin and Peter Alarie were 3rd.
Tim Hancock (crew) and Ian Pinnell (driver) (England) – Tim and Ian have teamed up for the 2001 season, and very recently won the UK National Championship together. Ian is a past Fireball and Enterprise World Champion, and has won the 505 European Championship. Tim won the 1993 505 World Championship, crewing for Ian Barker. Tim has also campaigned Tornados and Solings successfully. Ian and his past crew finished in the top five at the Durban 505 Worlds in 2000.
Holger Jess (crew) and Wolfgang Hunger (driver) (Germany) – Wolfgang and Holger have been finishing near the front of the worlds fleet at every 505 World Championship they have contested. They were not in Durban but had a top five finish at the 1999 505 World Championship in Quiberon France. Wolfgang is a past 470 World Champion.
